Vaginoplasty Surgery

iStock_000012555629MediumRecovery following vaginoplasty procedure can take several weeks, but the cosmetic surgeon will usually allow the patient to resume their normal routine after the first week. The treated sites should be kept clean to minimize infection risks. If absorbable sutures have been used, they will dissolve in about three to four weeks.

The surgeon may prescribe an antibiotic ointment to be used in the incision lines twice a day for the first two weeks. Sexual activity may have to be avoided for at least one month to allow the incisions to heal well.

Outstanding and committed plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides vaginoplasty to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations in The Peach State.

Mild Discomfort, Bruising and Swelling

Most patients will experience mild post-operative discomfort. The surgeon may prescribe some pain meds to help with the initial symptoms. Some amount of bruising and swelling will occur in almost every case of vaginoplasty. Bruising will resolve quickly, but swelling will mitigate gradually over several weeks.

Icing the incision sites in the first two days will help to reduce swelling. The cosmetic surgeon will recommend the patient to wear comfortable, loose fitting undergarments and clothing until the healing is better. Tighter clothing can cause friction with the incisions, which can hurt and prolong recovery. Tampons should be avoided during initial recovery and pads may be used according to the surgeon’s advice.

First Month of Recovery

From the second week onwards, most patients can return to their normal routine or go back to work. But they should increase their physical activities only gradually. Lifting of heavy objects should be avoided for the entire first month. Jogging, power walking, aerobics or impact exercises should be avoided, but normal walking is encouraged.

The patient may have a watery or sticky discharge and experience even more spotting as the sutures absorb and break. Minor wound edges may open up and separate in a few cases. But this is not a serious concern because the tissue in labiaplasty is repaired in multiple layers, so the risk of the wound opening up entirely is rare.

Minor wound separation of the edges will often heal from the bottom up and the patient will not see any traces of wound separation in a few months.

Next Few Months

After the first month, if the patient still experiences mild soreness in the incisions, she may wait an additional week or two before resuming more strenuous activities. Patients who have received laser resurfacing may have to wait for a longer period for normal coloration to be restored.

If the patient experiences abnormal bleeding, has an odorous discharge, has high fever or has increased swelling around the labia or vulva, she should promptly contact the surgeon’s office. In normal cases, the patient can begin the vaginal softening exercises as per the surgeon’s advice at about week six.

These exercises can help improve the results and restore the vaginal strength. Sagacious and impressive plastic surgeon Dr. McCluskey receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and other neighborhoods and suburbs in this area of the country for vaginoplasty and various other cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

New York Times: Teenage Girls Seeking Genital Surgery | AtlantaIn recent times, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of teenage girls visiting cosmetic surgeons to shape or trim the external genitalia. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has, in fact, recently issued guidance from its Committee on Adolescent Health Care to medical practitioners, urging them to educate patients about this surgical procedure and its non-surgical alternatives.

According to Dr. Julie Strickland, the chairwoman of A.C.O.G.’s committee on adolescent healthcare, plastic surgeons are almost baffled by a conspicuous increase in demand for genital cosmetic surgery among teenagers. Dr. Paul McCluskey provides sexual aesthetics procedures to patients in Atlanta, GA and surrounding locations.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Genital surgery for adult women is usually offered by cosmetic surgeons as vaginal rejuvenation. It involves tightening of the outer and inner vaginal muscles, and in many cases, shaping of the labia. However, this procedure is typically geared to address the needs of older women and women who have given birth.

But gynecologists who care for teenage girls increasingly report that they are receiving more inquiries every week from patients who want to have their labia minora surgically trimmed. Most of these requests are made for cosmetic reasons, but occasionally for functional reasons, such as to seek relief from discomfort.

While the official guideline does not rule out labiaplasty for teens, but it points out that such a procedure is rarely appropriate. According to Dr. Strickland, labiaplasty requests from teens should not be encouraged until growth and development is complete.

Rising Demand from Teens

As per the figures released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 400 girls 18 and younger had labiaplasty in 2015, representing an 80 percent jump from the previous year. While the absolute numbers continue to be small, the data does not fully indicate the trend because it does not include procedures performed by gynecologists.

A British report from 2013 revealed that the number of labial reductions performed on girls and women by the National Health Service had increased five-fold over 10 years. While girls 18 and younger account for less than two percent of all cosmetic procedures, they account for nearly five percent of all labiaplasty procedures. Dr. McCluskey is a dedicated plastic surgeon providing sexual aesthetic procedures to patients in Atlanta, GA and nearby areas.

Reasons behind the Trend

According to experts, many young girls wax or shave their pubic hair, which exposes the genital area. A study conducted in 2012 found that over 70 percent of girls and young women in the age group of 12 to 20 said they routinely waxed or shaved the pubic area. These girls are of an age when they can surf the Internet to find attractive images of the vulva. This may give many young girls the aspiration to have a more aesthetically appealing genital area.

However, medical experts agree that not all concerns of young girls about misshape or large labia are merely cosmetic. If a girl is involved in certain types of physical activities or sports, she may experience discomfort, such as itching or chafing in the labia. A labiaplasty may be appropriate in such cases.

Labiaplasty Plastic Surgery

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to reshape outer and inner lips of vagina in women. Elongation or asymmetry of labia which is caused by childbirth, intercourse, aging or genetics can be cured by labiaplasty.

There are various reasons why patients want to undergo labiaplasty. The primary reason is to reduce the genital pain. Some patients just want to improve the look of their vagina or improve their sex-related expectations though labiaplasty is not designed for that purpose.

Ideal candidates for labiaplasty are women who suffer from chronic pain of enlarged vaginal lips which prevents them having pleasant sexual intercourse or wear tight clothing.

Types of labiaplasty

There are three types of labiaplasty:

In amputation technique, the size of labia is reduced by simply trimming the excess tissue. The tissue will be removed by using instruments such as laser or scalpel. Wound or bleeding will be controlled during the surgery.

Central wedge resection technique involves removal of tissues from labial center in triangular form. Remaining tissue will be retracted in order to reduce the labia size. It produces less amount of scarring than in amputation technique. Rare complications of numbness can occur for a short time after surgery.

De-epithelisation technique employs an alternative method of removing some layers of epithelium from both sides of labia. It produces least amount of scarring and damage to connective tissues. Numbness is most unlikely to occur in this technique but can increase the width of labia.

Cost

The total cost of labiaplasty will cover the charges for local anesthesia, plastic surgeon and facility. Reduction of both major and minor labia can be performed at the same time to avoid paying twice for anesthesia and facility. Overall price may fall anywhere in between $5000 to $10000. Insurance will cover the cost if the treatment is required for genuine reasons. Besides, medical facilities that provide labiaplasty will provide additional financing options.

Recovery – As explained by plastic surgeon

Patients are advised to strictly adhere to the cosmetic surgeon’s guidelines for recovery since it is a very sensitive procedure. Intercourse is strictly not permitted for at least a month after treatment. Bruising in surrounding areas of labia will occur alongside tenderness and swelling for less than a week.

Use of medication is encouraged to speed up the recovery time. Pain killers and antibiotics can be prescribed to prevent infection. Hygiene products such as pads will provide comfort in times of post-surgical bleeding.

Risks

Concerns over the safety of vaginal cosmetic surgery have taken the center stage of medical debate. Risks involved with labiaplasty are seen to diminish the little benefits that it can provide. They are:

  1. Bleeding
  2. Numbness
  3. Infection
  4. Variation in pigmentation
  5. Loss of symmetry between inner and outer labia lips
  6. Increased pain and swelling
  7. Buildup of scar tissue

 Surgery After a Baby

shutterstock_230420884Vaginal cosmetic surgery is a procedure used to tighten up a vagina which has become less taut due to childbirth or age. Many a time after going through a vaginal birth women might feel a little slackness in their vaginal canal due to intense pressure and stretching that the vagina goes through during the time of delivering a baby’s head. The tissues lose their original strength which also leads to a decrease in the vaginal sensation during any kind of sexual activity. Vaginal cosmetic surgery in the forms of vaginoplasty and labiaplasty help in repairing and correcting the damaged muscles and tissues and taking care of the aesthetics too.

Vaginoplasty and Labiaplasty

Vaginoplasty refers to surgically tightening the vaginal tissues in order to increase sexual response. It is a term used to represent a group of procedures which constitute vaginal cosmetic surgery. Labiaplasty on the other hand is plastic surgery on the labia. Labiaplasty can be performed on labia major (outer vaginal lips) or labia minor (inner vaginal lips). The surgery is more aesthetic than reconstructive as it typically focuses on making the labia smaller or making the vaginal lips symmetrical.

Post childbirth loosening of the vaginal tissues can lower a woman’s self-esteem and impede her from engaging in intimate relationships or getting back to a normal routine. There are specific exercises, mainly the Kegel exercises which are recommended post vaginal-childbirth for getting the vagina back to normal. However, a short surgical procedure may provide quicker and more effective results than the Kegel exercises and not to mention the aesthetic overhauling that adds to the entire healing process.

How long after childbirth can one go in for a vaginal cosmetic surgery?

Childbirth has different effects on different women. The nursing period, the medications that one might be on, and the general health condition are some of the factors that need to be taken into consideration before deciding on going through a vaginoplasty. It is preferable to go for a surgery 3-6 months after childbirth since it will ensure that there is no soreness left and any cuts or lacerations during the childbirth has completely healed.

It is important to consult an experienced and accredited plastic surgeon about the procedure and the expectation that one might have from it. As an experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey makes sure to answer all the queries and clear every doubt that one might have about the procedure and also set a realistic expectation of what to expect.

Post-surgery care

Like in any other surgery it is extremely important to take utmost care and follow every post-surgery ritual as prescribed by the doctor. After the surgery a little discomfort around the pelvic area is normal and might continue till 2 weeks after the procedure. A little bruising and swelling is also normal and may last a few days after the surgery. It is advisable to wash the area frequently to assist quick recuperation. It is also advised to abstain from any kind of sexual activity for a period of at least 6 weeks.

What is the G Shot?

First, the G Shot is a simple, pain-free procedure which is performed in the office. Second, the G Shot provides a nice enhancement of the most sensitive spot on the vaginal wall. There are many theories about the location of the “G spot” but experts agree that the G spot is a patch of tissue on the anterior (upper) vaginal wall which is often more prominent than the surrounding tissue. Many of the nerve endings associated with sexual pleasure are concentrated in the clitoris and the G spot. Some women don’t experience much sensation in the G spot while others find it to be a very sensitive area. The G Shot works best in women who already experience heightened sensation in the G spot area. Enhancing the volume and prominence of this area on the vaginal wall improves sensation for both the woman and her partner.

How does the G Shot work?

I completely understand that it’s a little intimidating and embarrassing for a patient to talk about these procedures during a consult. Patients have a lot of questions about procedures like the G Shot, or for that matter, anything to do with sexual aesthetics & vaginal rejuvenation, but they’re often afraid to ask. We’ve worked very hard to make this experience as comfortable and un-intimidating as possible. Often for procedures like the G Shot I will schedule the consult and the procedure on the same day. This means just one trip to the doctor! This means just one quick discussion about the procedure and what results the patient is trying to achieve, then a little numbing medicine, a little G Shot, and she’s out the door within the hour! In short, the G Shot is an injection of filler into the G spot.

Use of Fillers For The G-Shot

I typically use hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm but I’ve performed a number of G Shots by transferring the patient’s own fat into the G spot area. Both of these fillers (fat and hyaluronic acid, or HA) have their advantages and disadvantages. The hyaluronic acid G Shot is the simplest of in-office enhancements and only takes a few minutes. The patient can easily be in and out of the office in 20-30 minutes and the HA enhancement can last 9 months or longer. A G Shot with HA can also be repeated months later for further sexual enhancement without any risk of scar tissue formation or other side effects. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring component of the human body and the results of an HA G Shot actually improve with time because HA absorbs water causing additional prominence of the G spot.

Using The Patient’s Own Purified Fat For A G-Shot

Performing a G Shot with the patient’s fat takes a few extra minutes as compared to HA but the results are excellent. G spot enhancement using the patient’s own fat will also last 9 months or longer (often becoming permanent) and it can be repeated to improve the desired effect. Another advantage of using fat is that it can easily be combined with other procedures. If we are performing liposuction of other areas why not transfer some of the fat to the G spot to improve sexual satisfaction? The G shot only requires a few cc’s of fat (1-5cc) but during a typical fat-harvesting procedure I’ll remove 20-30cc of fat. We call this fat “liquid gold” because it is the patient’s own fat, dense in tissue factors and stem cells, and it can be used to enhance multiple areas of the body including the G spot, the labia majora, and labia minora, facial lines & lips, and it can be used for rejuvenation of the hands.

To reiterate, the G shot is a simple, short, pain-free, in-office procedure which can be performed on the same day as consultation. Patients will often experience heightened sensation afterward with very few, if any, risks or complications.
