    What is Clitoral Hood Reduction?

    Clitoral Hood Reduction

What is Clitoral Hood Reduction?Clitoral hood reduction, also known as clitoral hoodectomy, is a procedure performed by a cosmetic surgeon to reduce the size and the area of the clitoral hood in order to further expose the glans of the clitoris. The procedure decreases the degree of clitoral hood protrusion to make it less prominent.

While many patients have this surgery done at the same time as labiaplasty, it can also be performed as an independent procedure.

Amazing and committed plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides clitoral hood reduction to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations across the horizon.

    Surgical Goal

Clitoral hood reduction may sometimes be performed as an elective procedure where the therapeutic goal is to improve the sexual functioning of the patient, along with the aesthetic refinement of her vulva. It is a type of hoodplasty.

But in most cases, the cosmetic surgeon will perform clitoral hood reduction as a purely aesthetic procedure. The procedure is more often combined with labiaplasty to reduce the labia minora, while sometimes it may also be combined with a vagionoplasty procedure.

    Proportionate Reduction

Clitoral hood reduction may appear to be a rather minor surgery, but it is a sensitive procedure and should only be performed by a skilled surgeon. The surgeon will aim to enhance appearance without adversely affecting the function of the area treated. An experienced surgeon will only reduce the clitoral hood to the point where it appears less prominent.

The hood should also be more proportionate with the rest of the labia and vulva contours. The patient should have sufficient tissue to cover the clitoris properly after the hood reduction. Over-correction or complete removal of the clitoral hood could lead to a higher risk of complications.

The surgeon should be able to apply a customized surgical technique in a conservative manner to ensure that clitoral hood reduction causes no injury to the nerves in the area. This will ensure that the patient does not have undesirable changes to sensation and is still able to feel in the same way as before the surgery once the initial post-op numbness subsides.

    Surgical Techniques

One technique for reducing the clitoral hood is the bilateral excision of the prepuce tissue covering the clitoral glans, with particular attention to maintaining the glans in the midline. Another technique involves trimming away the redundant folds of clitoral prepuce tissue with incisions parallel to the long axis of the clitoris.

If clitoral hood reduction is performed along with labiaplasty to reduce labia minora, the surgeon will use the same incisions created for labiaplasty to also reduce the prepuce tissue of the clitoral glans. But in a few cases, separate incisions may be required.

    Results

The functional correction and aesthetic improvements with clitoral hood reduction typically have a high rate of patient satisfaction, and a low risk of complications. The procedure usually involves minimal recovery period, and the patient can resume their normal routine quickly.
