Vaginal Rejuvenation with Laser and Without Laser
Vaginal rejuvenation can be performed using plastic surgery or with non-surgical laser techniques. The sexual aesthetics surgeon will discuss the patient’s goals and recommend the appropriate technique.
Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides vaginal rejuvenation to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.
Vaginal Rejuvenation with Laser
The use of laser most commonly refers to the “non-surgical” or “non-invasive” method. This procedure uses energy, namely laser or radiofrequency. Both radiation energies are used at different wavelengths.
The energy is applied to the vaginal canal and external vulva to heat tissue (typically deeper with RF). This promotes the production of fresh collagen and improves blood flow to create more elastic and thickened, smooth tissue.
The use of energy can help eliminate loose labial skin and tighten the inner tissue creating a narrower vaginal canal, which allows for improved sensation and bladder support. Certain doctors believe that RF may penetrate the deeper layers with less damage.
The provider will use a local numbing cream, but there is no necessity for anesthesia. The downtime only lasts for a few days. The patient will typically undergo a course of three treatments, spaced a month apart.
Results with Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation
A tissue regeneration process that lasts for several weeks is initiated with each laser treatment. The patient may experience significant improvements even after the initial treatment. The vaginal mucosa is more hydrated and nourished, and the epithelium becomes more toned, thicker, and elastic.
This treatment also re-establishes the correct vaginal pH, which reduces the risk of infection and helps maintain a natural protective barrier. In addition, this procedure enhances the vaginal tissues at the urethral opening, which may reduce incontinence issues and improve sexual function.
But laser vaginal rejuvenation in itself cannot assure an enhanced sexual response as desire, arousal, and orgasm are complex and highly individual responses.
Vaginal Rejuvenation without Laser (Surgical Method)
Surgical vaginal rejuvenation aims to eliminate loose skin and tighten the vaginal canal. However, it is undertaken using sharp tools such as a scalpel or scissors and sutures. Effectively, the objective is to pull together the deeper layers of vaginal tissue and muscle and excise loose skin.
This is performed with a combination of procedures on the patient’s external genitalia (perineoplasty, labiaplasty) and internal canal (colporrhaphy, vaginoplasty). In general, some type of anesthesia is necessary, and the recovery will involve up to six weeks of restricted activity.
Surgical Procedure
To perform the surgery, the surgeon may use a traditional approach. They will eliminate excess tissue from the labia majora on the basis of the colored markings that are made prior to the procedure. An experienced surgeon will ensure that traditional surgery is undertaken in a precise manner and that the adjacent healthy tissue remains undamaged.
After the procedure, the surgeon will cautiously suture the incisions. They will clean the treated site thoroughly prior to removing the sterile drape. At this point, the patient may be able to see the surgical outcomes.
The results of the surgery can vary between two patients based on multiple factors such as the patient’s age, surgical complexity, level of labial tissue laxity. The outcomes will also vary depending on whether the labia majoraplasty was performed in combination with labia minora surgery or other vaginal rejuvenation procedures.
Recovery after Surgery
Most patients can resume their routine activities or return to work in almost one week after the procedure. The full recovery may take a few weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery undertaken.
